Back in June, Apple announced a new Mac Pro would be coming in the Autumn. It’s finally been released, and it was more than worth the wait.
The super high-performance device has been specifically designed for professional users – so businesses like yours can certainly reap the rewards. Here, we detail the features that make it Apple’s most powerful, configurable, expandable – and expensive – Mac yet…
Performance
Many of the Mac Pro’s new advancements centre around its incredible functionality. Its Intel Xeon processor allows for up to 28 cores – enabling you to perform all the tasks you want without limits. Plus, it doesn’t matter how demanding these are – there is a six-channel system of extremely quick ECC memory, along with 12 DIMM slots to boost this up to 1.5TB.
It also boasts the most powerful graphics card in the world – the Radeon Pro Vega II Duo MPX Module contains two AMD Radeon Pro Vega II Duo graphics processing units (GPUs). There are also 5.6 teraflops and 128GB of HBM2 memory. Resultantly, it boasts double the graphics performance, memory and memory bandwidth.
Expandability
Unlike the previous Mac Pro’s design, the new device has almost endless configurability and expandability. It has eight PCI Express slots (four door-wide, three single-wide, and one half-length pre-configured with the Apple I/O card). Plus, there’s four Thunderbolt 3 ports, two USB-A ports and two 10Gb Ethernet ports.
There’s also a rear expansion for up to 12 Thunderbolt 3 ports. You even have the option to connect the Mac Pro with 12 4K displays. Or, you can link it up to six Pro Display XDRs. On top of this, the device has 360-degree access so you can easily configure it and build a system that suits you completely.
Display
The Mac Pro’s potential partner, if you so choose, is the Pro Display XDR. The first of its kind, it has a Retina 6K display with a 32-inch edge-to-edge panel. The display boasts an exceptional brightness through its capacity for 1,600 nits, and ground-breaking backlighting technology. This allows for a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio.
Via a P3 wide colour gamut, and true 10-bit colour, the display shows over a billion colours. Plus, it has advanced LED technology, lighting shaping and image processing that limits a ‘blooming’ glow. The benefits don’t stop there either. It also has low reflectively, and an incredible viewing angle. Not to mention, it can be adjusted – choose between portrait or landscape.
Plus, there’s so much more – like Apple Afterburner to remove the need for proxy workflows and boost the performance of ProRes 4K and 8K videos. There’s even the option for wheels so you can move it between workspaces easily.
However, all its power and expandability mean it doesn’t come cheap. In fact, it’s the most expensive Mac ever. Depending on the amount of configurability you choose, it could end up costing up to £50,000! Yet there is an option: leasing. Not only does it make owning a high-spec device significantly more affordable, but it can also improve your cash flow.
