Will New Macs Make An Appearance? Our Expectations For The 2022 Apple September Event

On 7th September, Apple is holding a Special Event at their headquarters. Speculation is already running wild with theories on what products they’ll reveal, with a possible focus on iPhones – it is September after all…

However, this doesn’t mean that the rest of the Apple range won’t soon see some changes. Read on to find out what we think the September Special Event will cover, along with a potential event in October.

September: New iPhones and Apple Watches

September tends to be when Apple unveils the latest iPhone models – this year being the new iPhone 14 Pro. So, is this the ‘major’ new product? It seems possible, but the iPhone 14 Pro is one of four phones Apple is releasing this year, along with the iPhone 14 Max and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

When it comes to the Apple Watch, there may be more than one in the pipeline – we could see the Series 8, SE 2 and Pro, with the following features:

  • Apple Watch 8: Same design, size and S7 chip as Apple Watch 7, but a new ability to monitor the user’s temperature and alert to fever or track fertility.
  • Apple Watch SE 2: Same size again but with an optical heart sensor and an electrical heart sensor (ECG). Plus an always-on display and an S7 chip.
  • Apple Watch Pro: New larger 50mm size, titanium case, improved tracking metrics, and better battery life.

October: Possible Macs

Whilst iPhones are pretty much a guarantee, Macs aren’t – they may be kept under wraps until the rumoured October 2022 event. Yet one potential announcement could be a new Mac mini. Although the M2 MacBook Air and M2 MacBook Pro were announced recently at the WWDC keynote, the M1 Mac mini saw no updates. We think this is because Apple could be revealing a M2 Pro version of the Mac mini in October, alongside an M2 Mac mini.

There could be 14- and 16-inch M2 MacBook Pro models too. These, of course, did have the M1 Pro and M1 Max chip update in October 2021. However, reliable leaker Mark Gurman has said that the 14- and 16-inch MacBooks will be receiving M2 Pro and M2 Max chip upgrades before the end of 2022. As there’s very rarely a November event, October is most likely when it’ll happen. Yet Gurman also said that this might be pushed back until early 2023 due to supply chain challenges.

As for the Mac Pro, we anticipated this device at this year’s WWDC event, but it didn’t come to fruition. It’s been two years since Apple moved away from Intel, and they originally gave this transition a two-year timeframe, so we think a silicon Mac Pro has to happen before the end of the year – or perhaps Apple could discontinue it.

Whether or not these devices will appear on the showreels remains to be seen.

October: Prospective iPads

In March 2022, Gurman suggested that an autumn 2022 launch for a new iPad Pro is likely. The iPad Pro line was last updated in May 2021, bringing the silicon processor to the platform for the first time and adding mini-LED technology to the 12.9-inch model. So it stands to reason that we can expect an update this year.

If further speculation is to be believed, we might see Apple equip the 11-inch model with a Retina XDR display. Other changes to the screen tech could reduce the weight of the iPad Pro, but perhaps the biggest rumour of them all is that Apple may introduce an iPad Pro with an even larger screen.

Whatever the update, Gurman claimed it would be the most significant since the all-screen redesign in 2018. Yet perhaps the biggest iPad news is that Apple is reportedly prepping its completely redesigned entry-level tablet. The Home button is said to be staying, but the screen could increase from 10.2 to 10.5 inches. This means much slimmer bezels, and flatter edges like the iPad Pro.

Making Apple affordable

Naturally, we’ll have to wait and see what happens in September and October, but we’re certain that autumn will bring some exciting Mac announcements. Though, usually new devices means premium prices, which can often prevent entire markets from enjoying the latest technology – but not with leasing.
