Release radar: What to expect from Apple in 2025

2024 will go down in history as the year that Macs became Apple Intelligence-ready. Though they didn’t all get the M4 processor treatment we hoped for.

We’re on the edge of our seats to see which devices will evolve next, and what other surprises Apple has up its sleeve for the year ahead. So, popcorn at the ready, it’s time for our 2025 predictions reel…

Remaining Macs to get M4 chips

The first Macs to be chipped with the powerful, AI-ready M4 processor were iMac, Mac Mini and Macbook Pro. So, if you know your Macs, you’ll know that leaves three more devices still to be upgraded. Here’s what we know about them…

  • Macbook Air: Expected to transition from M3 to M4 at Apple’s spring event, which runs almost every year (fingers crossed…). There are also rumours that it will be fitted with a brand new FaceTime Centre Stage camera – watch this space.
  • Mac Studio: It’s been two years since the last update, meaning this device is expected to jump from M2, straight to M4 Max and Ultra. This could be announced at Apple’s WWDC Keynote event in June, or maybe even in the first quarter according to Bloomberg Analyst Marc Gurman.
  • Mac Pro: The only Mac that still retains its pre-silicon design. While we expect the Mac Pro to make the jump from M2 to M4 Max and Ultra, it remains unclear whether it will get a new look.

On an exciting side note, there are rumblings of another iMac Pro update which could see the return of the discontinued 27-inch screen – or perhaps even larger! We’ll take a hopeful punt on it arriving this autumn, but meanwhile Apple has got plenty of other releases in the works too…

Next-gen iPad incoming

Apple’s cheapest tablet is finally getting its moment in the sun! The original iPad was the only model in the range not to be updated last year. A surprise to many, given the fact it didn’t get one in 2023 either, following regular annual updates in previous years.

We’re anticipating that this year’s spring event could see the iPad level up to 11th Generation, with the same A17 Pro chip used by the 2024 iPad mini, allowing it to support Apple Intelligence.

iPhone SE, iPhone 17 and Apple Watch drops

If the strong rumours are true, the 4th-generation iPhone SE will also blossom this spring – three years since its previous update. Will it support Apple Intelligence? The grapevine seems to think so. We’ve even heard whispers SE will potentially be the first iPhone to ship with a modem made by Apple, which could help keep costs down. A bigger SE Plus, has also been circulating round the rumour mill.

Later in autumn, we also expect the announcement of iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro, with rumours intensifying around a fresh ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air model with brand new features.

Meanwhile, generational updates for the Apple Watch Ultra and the Apple Watch SE are said to be on the horizon, with the SE potentially being announced in spring. We could see blood pressure monitoring on the new devices in 2025, while the Ultra may gain the ability to send emergency texts via satellite.
