Another year, another influx of incoming Apple releases to get excited about! After the unexpected drop of the M5 chip into the 14-inch MacBook Pro in October, we know it’s only a matter of time before M5 gets rolled out across the rest of the Mac range. And if the rumours are true, Apple might tick both the affordability and high-grade performance boxes with this year’s new drops.
Which models are first in line? When will the rollout happen? What else can we expect? Nothing is certain with Apple, but we’ll do our best to round up the latest whispers from across the Appleverse…
MacBook Pro
We’ll pick up from where Apple left off. Following the launch of the M5 14-inch MacBook Pro release last autumn, Apple will soon bring both the 14 and 16-inch versions up to date with the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips – delivering up to 55% more performance compared to their predecessors.
Expect the same designs, displays and ports as the current versions. However, Apple will employ a new chip making process that splits the CPU and GPU in half, which could allow users to mix and match – but that remains to be seen.
Rumours suggest this could be a post-January release, maybe even towards spring. But with Apple, you never know…
MacBook ‘SE’
Introducing Apple’s challenger to the budget Chromebook: the MacBook ‘SE’ – or low-cost MacBook, we don’t have an official name yet! What we do know is that it will have a 13-inch display and it will have the best battery life of any laptop ever.
It will most likely be powered by either the A18 or A19 chips with Pro versions, bringing faster performance than the M1 chip. A solid, reliable option for anyone who is looking for a cheap entry point to the Apple ecosystem. This one is tipped to dominate the affordable laptop market.
There are rumours to suggest that it could land in January, but nothing is set in stone and it could well be later in the year.
MacBook Air
Same design, new chip. The MacBook Air will be upgraded to M5 bringing supercharged CPU and GPU performance to this highly portable yet mightily powerful MacBook. It’s looking more likely that this will land in Apple’s spring event, but nothing is certain.
Later in the year
Apple’s annual WWDC event in June is rumoured to be the launching pad for the upgraded Mac Mini with the M5 and M5 Pro chips, and Mac Studio with M5 Max and (drumroll please) M5 Ultra! Apple skipped the inclusion of an Ultra chip in the M4 series so we’re expecting a huge performance and graphics upgrade here.
What’s more, circulating rumours suggest that Apple could not only launch a new M5 24-inch iMac, but bring back the sorely missed iMac Pro – in Space Black! We could see this closer to autumn, and there are even rumours of an OLED display here, but perhaps not for a couple of years, so don’t hold your breath on that component.
Upgrade to the latest Macs through leasing
As Apple prepares to smash the affordable market wide open with their forthcoming low-cost MacBook, they’re also dialling back the years to pre-COVID with the high-end, not-so-portable, yet much adored iMac Pro, potentially making a return later in the year.
