WWDC 2025: What to expect

WWDC 2025 is just round the corner, and it looks like it’s going to be another software-only occasion. After all, WWDC has never traditionally been a ‘hardware’ event – until 2023 when Apple flipped the script with a hat-trick of new devices!

While we aren’t expecting any hardware announcements at this event, there’s still plenty to get excited about for this year’s event. 2025 marks the first WWDC since the official launch of Apple Intelligence, so we expect a deeper dive into more use cases, capabilities, and maybe even future developments.

However, all the attention appears to be firmly on UI, rather than AI, which is tipped to be getting the biggest overhaul in a decade…

What, when, and where?

WWDC – the Worldwide Developers Conference – is a multi-day get-together for Apple’s development partners consisting of software reveals, discovery sessions and a public keynote on the first day. WWDC 2025 will take place from 9th-13th June and will run as an online free event – as it has done since 2020.

Despite Apple’s transition to virtual events, there will be one very hush hush in-person experience. This special component will see select developers, students, and members of the media invited to Apple Park campus in Cupertino, California, where they’ll watch the keynote and meet Apple employees.

For the rest of us, the keynote will be free to watch live on Apple’s website and YouTube at 6pm BST on Monday 9th June.

Enter: “Solarium”

The rumours around new UI design overhauls for iOS 19 and macOS 16 have been rife for some time – but Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports this will be applied right across the Apple family to ensure consistency. This includes tvOS and watchOS, with a light-touch applied to visionOS (in a way that makes sense for the headset).

The new interface will be named “Solarium” in reference to glass-walled rooms that let in and refract sunlight. You guessed it, that’s why this year’s logo is every colour of the rainbow – and we can expect the new designs to follow that lighter, softer theme. Rumours include translucent backgrounds, circular app icons, and rounded corners on dialogue boxes, search bars, and app menus – loosely based on the Vision Pro interface.

A quick round-up of the new operating systems to look out for, then:

  • macOS 26
  • iOS 26
  • iPadOS 26
  • watchOS 26

You might notice that those numbers have skipped ahead a few years on their previous iterations. No, you haven’t missed any exclusive launches – this is all part of a numbering system change Apple is expected to announce. Now, the name of each OS will be synchronised to its release year, making it easier for users to track updates.

Regardless, users can expect these systems to have greater cross-platform consistency, all brought together by glassy aesthetics, floating designs, and light-feel touches all round!
