Is the MacBook Neo a good device for business?

All-new Apple devices are few and far between in this era of upgrades, let alone new Macs. That’s why the MacBook Neo turned everyone’s heads when it was launched back in March 2026, alongside a range of other more powerful Mac refreshes.

Should you consider Apple’s latest family member for your business though? That really depends on what you need it for, and whether you value price over performance!

Where does Neo sit in the market?

The Neo has been repeatedly positioned in the press as Apple’s challenger to the Chromebook – an ‘everyday’ device that doesn’t break the bank and gets you from A to B, digitally.

While its performance and build quality is superior to the Chromebook, the Neo does sit at more than double the price. That said, it’s considerably cheaper than any other Mac in the Appleverse.

A quick look under the hood

It runs on an A18 Pro chip – the very same as the iPhone 16 Pro. It’s still a powerful chip, and does support Apple Intelligence, but it pales in comparison to Apple’s M-series chips and isn’t designed to handle demanding, high-intensive workflows.

When it comes to SSD storage, the Neo starts at 256GB SSD with an upgraded 512GB version. However, at only 8GB unified memory, both versions deliver half of what Apple’s previous minimum memory was for a Mac. This is reflected in our affordable lease price of £4.35 per week plus VAT.

A quick performance comparison with one of Apple’s more powerful recent upgrades, and the M5 MacBook Air is roughly 90-95% faster than the Neo in multi-core tasks (like video editing). It also offers superior GPU power and starts with 16GB memory.

What tasks is the Neo ideal for?

Despite packing more punch than the Chromebook, Neo still only stands up to everyday tasks. It’s great for flying through your go-to apps, browsing the web, video calling, and basic creative jobs. Anything more demanding might prove too much. That explains why Apple’s official website puts the student target market front and centre in its imagery and messaging.

However, don’t let this completely rule it out for your business. Other more professional use cases include spreadsheet and payroll management, showcasing its ability to make light work of typical yet essential admin tasks. Combined with Apple Intelligence, the Neo still has potential to boost productivity too.

Should you consider it for your business?

The MacBook Neo could prove a cost-effective investment and prevent overspending on overly technical devices. That is, if it’s used exclusively for low-intensity tasks and workflows – think admin, data entry or even apprentice roles as potentially suitable fits. Just beware of the limitations, especially if the requirements or demands of these roles develop.

For more intense tasks and to seamlessly bounce between everyday usage and more complex workflows, you might think about levelling up. Sacrificing performance to save money could end up costing you more in the long run.
